PORSCHE 953 - CONQUEST OF THE SAHARA

In the spring of 1983 dream team of Porsche Racing division’s leaderJacky Ickx, Porsche's Head of Development, Helmuth Bott and racing mastermind engineer, Roland Kussmaul decided to develop a 911 with all-wheel drive in order to enter the Dakar Rally event the following year. Project was named Porsche 953. The main change from 911 to 953 was the four-wheel drive system which was sourced from Audi Quattro. It was powered by standard 3.2-litre boxer-six engine, detuned with a lower compression over fears of the quality of fuel in Africa. The body was heavily reinforced by a welded steel roll cage, meanwhile, the doors, roof, front bumpers and all the glass where made of polycarbonate plastics in order to save weight. A trio of these cars were assembled and entered in the epic race, which amounted to around 11,000km in length. Porsche’s win on the 1984 Paris-Dakar was the first time a sports car had won the event.

The Car. The Myth. The Legend.
